Before we delve into the flower remedies, let’s remember that anxiety is mainly a secondary emotion. To put it in a simple way: a primary emotion is how a situation actually makes us feel, while a secondary emotion is a reaction to a primary emotion because the primary feeling is uncomfortable.

In my experience, anxiety often signals another underlying emotion, which is what Bach Flower Remedies aim to address—the cause, not the effect.

If you’re new to flower essences, it’s perfectly fine to start managing your anxiety with an emergency remedy like Rescue Remedy®, which many of my clients have used as a starting point. While this blend is widely recognized and effective, its benefits are temporary, as it’s designed for emergency situations.

For example, consider an actor feeling anxious before a performance. Many actors rely on Rescue Remedy®. However, it’s essential to explore the reasons behind their anxiety, to help them overcome it for good.". They might have specific fears about being on stage, which could indicate a need for Mimulus,  or feel overwhelmed by the pressure of their performance hence their responsibility on the success of the show and the work of al the people involved, in which case Elm might be more appropriate.

These examples illustrate the importance of selecting a remedy that resonates with your personal experiences and feelings. The same situation may require different flower essences based on individual circumstances.

How To Select the Bach Flower Remedies that are right for you

If you’re using Bach Flower Remedies for self-help, start by asking yourself questions to identify the root of your anxiety and the primary emotions behind it. Consider questions like:

In which situations do I feel anxious?

Is there a specific trigger for my anxiety?

Why do I feel anxious? (Is it due to fears, worries, or other negative emotions?)

You might define those negative emotions like this:

  • I feel anxious because I am afraid of…

  • I am worried about…

  • I don’t trust…

  • I have too much on my plate…

  • I feel like I don’t have enough time…

  • I want to be productive but struggle to concentrate…

  • I keep finding myself in the same problematic situations…

  • Things aren’t moving fast enough…

These are some examples of prompts that can guide you toward the remedies you need. If you’re unsure, think back to the last time you felt anxious and reflect on your thoughts and feelings at that moment. There are also many free online quizzes available to help you identify suitable remedies.

One important note: don’t fear selecting the wrong remedy. Taking it won’t harm you; it simply may not be effective. If it doesn’t resonate, you can always return to your feelings and try another remedy without any consequences.

In the coming weeks, I’ll explore different emotions that trigger anxiety, organized by type.

Let’s begin with remedies that address anxiety rooted in fears: I summarized them here below.
