How do we choose the remedy that is best suited for us?

Bach Flower Remedies offer a holistic, natural approach to emotional well-being, aiming to address the root causes of emotional imbalances. Dr. Edward Bach, the system's founder, believed that physical illness arises from emotional disharmony. For this reason key principle in using these remedies effectively is understanding that they must be chosen based on an individual’s emotional state, not merely the situation or condition they are facing.

While it’s common to select a remedy based solely on outward symptoms—such as fatigue, stress, or sadness—Dr. Bach emphasized that what truly matters is the person’s emotional response to life’s challenges. This means that two individuals experiencing the same situation, like feeling tired, may need entirely different remedies, depending on how they emotionally perceive and react to their fatigue.

To illustrate this, let’s explore two common remedies: Olive and Hornbeam. Both can be used for fatigue, but they address two very different emotional states.

Tiredness: Olive vs. Hornbeam

  • Olive: Exhaustion from Physical or Mental Overload

When you feel utterly drained—both mentally and physically—Olive is the remedy you may need. It’s indicated for those who have pushed themselves to the limit, whether through intense work, illness, or mental strain. The exhaustion associated with Olive is profound and all-encompassing. It’s not just a feeling of being tired—it’s a deep weariness that follows a period of overexertion.

Dr. Bach placed Olive in the group “insufficient interest in present circumstances” and described it as the remedy for those who experience daily life as hard work, devoid of pleasure. He stated: “Daily life is hard work for them, without pleasure.” (From The 12 Healers and Other Remedies by Dr. Bach).

Olive works by helping to heal the exhaustion from within, enabling a deeper level of rest and renewal.

  • Hornbeam: Mental Fatigue or Lack of Motivation

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)

On the other hand, Hornbeam is suited for those who feel mentally tired or lack motivation—not due to physical overwork, but just at the thought of work. It’s that feeling of “Monday morning fatigue,” a mental inertia that makes the thought of facing the day feel daunting, even when there’s no physical reason for the tiredness.

Hornbeam represents a non-genuine form of tiredness—more of a mental block before tackling the day or specific tasks. Dr. Bach categorized it under “doubt”, describing it as being for those who feel they lack the strength—mentally or physically—to face their daily responsibilities. “For those who feel they have not sufficient strength, mentally or physically…” (From The 12 Healers and Other Remedies by Dr. Bach).

If you find yourself procrastinating or feeling like you're struggling to get started, Hornbeam is the remedy to consider.

Why Individuality Matters in Bach Flower Remedies

The crucial takeaway here is that the same symptom—fatigue—can have two completely different emotional causes, and those causes must guide the remedy choice. Though the tiredness may seem the same on the surface, Olive and Hornbeam work in entirely different ways because they address different emotional imbalances.

This concept is at the heart of Bach Flower Remedies: remedies should be chosen based on the person, not the situation. It’s not enough to focus only on the symptom—what matters is how the individual feels emotionally about that symptom. By recognizing the underlying emotional states behind the symptoms, you can choose the remedy that best aligns with the person’s unique situation, offering a personalized and effective approach to healing.

For example, someone who is physically exhausted from overwork will benefit from Olive, whereas someone who feels mentally drained and lacks the energy to face their day—despite not being physically tired—might find relief in Hornbeam. This individualized approach is what makes Bach Flower Remedies so unique and effective.

How to Choose the Right Remedy

When selecting a Bach Flower Remedy, consider the emotional state behind your symptoms. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • When do I feel tired?

  • Does my tiredness arise after and event , as a consequence or before an event as a doubt?

  • What thoughts accompany my tiredness? Am I exhausted after a difficult or intense period in life, or do I feel tired just thinking about doing something?

  • Have I recently gone through a time of overwork or illness?

  • Have I been under mental strain?

  • Do I often feel a lack of motivation or procrastinate?

These questions can help guide you toward the remedy that best matches your emotional state. Bach Flower Remedies are most effective when aligned with your personal emotional needs.
