Heartbreak is one of the most painful experiences we can go through in life. Whether it’s the end of a relationship, the loss of a loved one, or a sudden change in circumstances—such as losing a job, facing a health scare, or learning difficult news—one of the common reactions we experience is shock.
How Can Bach Flowers Help Us?
Seeking Immediate Relief: Rescue Remedy®
When we are caught off guard and need immediate emotional support. Rescue Remedy® is the emergency formula created by Dr. Bach. It’s designed for times of crisis or when we’re feeling overwhelmed by distress. Rescue Remedy® is a blend of five Bach Flower Remedies—Star of Bethlehem, Rock Rose, Impatiens, Clematis, and Cherry Plum—and it can be used during any emotional crisis, including traumatic events or high-stress situations.
You can take four drops directly into your mouth, add them to a glass of water, or apply them to your pulse points—whichever method works best for you.

While Rescue Remedy can provide immediate support, heartbreak and trauma are not states that can be overcome in just a few minutes or even days. Healing requires ongoing support, which is where Bach Flower Remedies for long-term healing come in. Let's start with one of the remedies which are also present in the emergency mix.
Star of Bethlehem
Star of Bethlehem is one of the most essential remedies for dealing with the emotional aftermath of a heart break and the subsequent shock, trauma. Dr. Bach wrote:
“For those in great distress under conditions which for a time produce great unhappiness. The shock of serious news, the loss of someone dear, the fright following an accident, and such like.” (Edward Bach, The Twelve Healers and Other Remedies)
Star of Bethlehem helps dissipate both recent and past shocks, sorrow, grief and loss allowing the heart and mind to process the emotional impact of an event. It provides comfort and healing when you’re feeling emotionally “stuck,” numb, stunned, or overwhelmed by emotions that follow a traumatic event.
It works by:
Helping process the emotional trauma
Bringing comfort: I often describe it as a warm, cozy blanket on a cold day.
Healing both new and old wounds: It frees you from the emotional weight of past experiences and allows you to move forward, living life fully again.

A Personal Note: Trust the Process
Shock and trauma affect us profoundly, and Bach Flower Remedies work gently over time. It may take some patience to feel the full effects of Star of Bethlehem, but I can assure you—based on both my personal and professional experience—that if you trust the remedies and use them consistently, the benefits will be profound and long-lasting.
If you feel stuck by a present or past shock, I warmly suggest Star of Bethlehem as a key remedy in your healing process.
A Brief Reflection from My Experience with Clients
Whenever I hear the word “shock” from a client, Star of Bethlehem is often one of the first remedies I recommend. When I explain its healing properties, I can almost always see immediate relief in the client's expressions. It’s a powerful reminder that emotional healing through Bach Flower Remedies begins with acknowledging our feelings and connecting with a practitioner. As we discuss the remedies, we often sense which ones resonate most with us. A personalized selection supports us in moving forward and healing our emotional wounds and allows the remedies to work at their best.
How Do I Take Star of Bethlehem?
There are several ways you can incorporate Star of Bethlehem into your routine:
Directly in your mouth: Place 2 drops directly in your mouth. Repeat if necessary (there is no risk of overdose with these flower essences).
In Water: Add 2 drops of Star of Bethlehem to a glass of water (or any drink of your choice) and sip throughout the day. This is a gentler method that helps the remedy work over a longer period, supporting your emotional balance as you process your feelings. Some of my clients like to add their drops to the water bottle they carry with them throughout the day, ensuring they get a consistent dosage.
Create a Personalized Remedy Blend: You can combine Star of Bethlehem with other remedies that address your unique broken heart emotional state. For example: Sweet Chestnut for despair or hopelessness., Mimulus for fear about the future, Willow for bitterness or resentment. (we'll talk about these remedies in the upcoming weeks). You can combine up to 7 remedies in a 30ml dropper bottle with spring water ( put 2 drops for each remedy ), taking 4 drops at least 4 times a day. You can also add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar or vegetable glycerin as a preservative. This blend should last around three weeks.
Add to a Bath: For an extra dose of emotional soothing, add a few drops of Star of Bethlehem to your bath. This is a lovely way to incorporate the remedy into your self-care routine, allowing the flower essence to work while you relax and unwind.

This blog is just a general view on Bach Flower Remedies, as I always remind here, they work better if selected based on your personal state and unique traits.
That’s why it’s essential to seek guidance from a qualified Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner, who can help select the remedies best suited to your needs.
